When one first hears the word "osteopathy", many think about bone specialists or orthopaedic surgeons. The term « osteopathy » can often lead to confusion. When taken literally, this term should apply to bone-related illnesses, and yet no one uses it in this sense. In fact, the term "osteopathy" was coined by the founder of this discipline, Andrew Taylor Still, in the late 19th century in the United States.

This term is said to have stemmed from "osteo-pathway", or "bone-related pathology". In fact, osteopathy is a manual approach which consists in diagnosing and healing pain mainly related to the musculoskeletal system - comprised of the muscles, the bones, the ligaments, the tendons, the cartilage, and which enables movement - and to other disorders linked to the digestive system such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and reflux. Osteopathy also helps the healing of migraines and other types of headaches.
